🐾 How high does asphalt temperature soar during summer ♨️

Hi Reader,

I know that summer is ending, but since it's still soo hot outside, I would like to talk about your pet's paws. Paw care is often overlooked, especially in summer. But healthy paws have a direct impact on your pet's well-being 🐾

There's a common misconception that dogs' paws can handle any surface and temperature, but just like our feet, they are sensitive to extreme temperatures. And summer temperatures nowadays are always extreme 🥵

As the air temperature rises, so does the temperature of the streets and sidewalks. While dogs may build some tolerance, they can't endure scorching asphalt during the summer. When you take your dog out, don't just consider the air temperature; pavement is usually significantly hotter.

Dog paws can blister and develop ulcers, just like human feet, if exposed to such heat.

So how hot can asphalt get?

Well, it can get really really hot…

When the air temperature is 77°F (25°C), the asphalt in the sun can be as hot as 125°F (52°C).

With an air temperature of 87°F (31°C), the asphalt can heat up to 143°F (62°C)!

At 125°F (52 °C) tissue damage can occur in less than 60 seconds.

As you can see, scorching asphalt can cause serious damage to your pet's paws. So do you need to Google the air temperature every time you want to go for a walk with your pup? No, don't worry 😊 Here's a little trick you can use 👇

Touch the pavement with your hands or your feet and if you can’t keep them on the surface for at least 10 seconds, it’s not safe for your dog’s paws 😎

How to care for your dog's paws during summer:

  • Be careful when going for a walk during those first hot summer days when your pup's paws are not used to hot surfaces.
  • Check the pavement temperature when going for a walk.
  • When you get home from a walk, use a moisturizer or paw wax. Dry paws crack easily and are more susceptible to burns.
  • Walk your dog in grassy or shady areas if possible.
  • Try to walk your dog in the morning when it’s not so hot and the asphalt is not burning.
  • You can try using dog shoes
  • Check your dog’s paws after each walk. Not just for burns, but also for cracks, redness, wounds, broken nails, or swelling.
