I love Christmas. It's my favorite time of the year - I love the glittering lights, delightful aromas and just spending time with my family and friends.
In my heart, the joy of the holidays is also intricately woven with the love and companionship of our four-legged friends. Like countless pet parents, our holiday celebrations have consistently featured our beloved animalsโthey are an integral part of our family. At times, this meant spending the Christmas Eve with our 2 dogs, 4 cats and a bunny. I bit challenging but totally worth it ๐ฅฐ
As a person, I love Christmas. But as a veterinarian... well...sadly I have to say it's one of the most dangerous holidays for your four legged friends.
Amidst all the excitement and, let's be honest, sometimes pure chaos that comes with Christmas, itโs really important to keep your dog safe.
Here are my 5 tips on how to make sure your pup is safe during this magical season โบ๏ธ
#1 Keep human food out of your dogโs reach and your pup out of the kitchen
Certain festive treats may be harmful to your furry friend. Ensure your pup stays out of the kitchen and safely away from any tempting table scraps.
#2 Secure your Christmas tree and keep decorations and candles out of reach
Secure your Christmas tree to prevent any unexpected topples. Decorations, lights, and candles should be placed out of your dog's reach to avoid any unintended mishaps.
#3 Keep your dog away from holiday plants
Holiday plants like mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias can be toxic to pets. Create a pet-friendly zone by keeping these plants out of your pup's reach. Opt for artificial decorations if your dog has a tendency to nibble on greenery.
#4 Keep an eye on your dog when you have visitors
When hosting gatherings, it's essential to keep a watchful eye on your dog. Some pups may get overwhelmed by the excitement of visitors. You can create a quiet retreat for your dog to escape the festivities if he's feeling overwhelmed. Make sure your guests are aware of your furry friend.
#5 Buy a dog-safe costume if you want your dog to wear one
I'm not a big fan of dog costumes, but if you want one, make sure it's pet friendly and safe. Avoid any accessories that could pose a choking hazard or cause discomfort. Also, please buy the right size โบ๏ธ
